Short Stories Live: ‘Dubliners’ on Bloomsday

Downstairs at Town Hall; enter on Seneca Street. $10-$15.

Literary, Short Stories Live

SSL-Dubliners-small-webBloomsday—commemorating the life of Irish writer James Joyce and his signature achievement, the novel Ulysses—always falls on June 16. But June 16 isn’t always a Short Stories Live Sunday—except in 2013. Though the day often is celebrated with marathon readings from the book, that doesn’t quite fit the format for Short Stories Live, our popular intimate literary series. Instead, a top professional cast will celebrate with selections from Dubliners, Joyce’s 1914 collection of 15 vivid short stories, which is doubly perfect: Not only does that fit our short-story bill, but several characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Ulysses. The program, directed by ACT artistic director Kurt Beattie, includes An Encounter, read by Connor Toms; Clay, read by Kate Purwin; Two Gallants, read by Sean Griffin; and—perhaps, since it is Bloomsday—a bit or two from Ulysses itself. Presented by Town Hall.
Advance tickets are $13/$10 Town Hall members, seniors & students, at www.townhallseattle.org; $15/$13 at the door. Town Hall members receive priority seating. Downstairs at Town Hall; enter on Seneca Street.
